Half a dozen brands will out-spec the RadCity for less money. None of them will sell you a replacement controller in five years, and that is the whole argument.

Rad Power Bikes has been the default answer to "which electric bike should I get" in the United States for the better part of a decade. The company has been building since 2007, has sold in the hundreds of thousands, and for a long stretch was the only ebike brand a non-cyclist could name. The RadCity is its city bike: upright, 27.5 inch wheels, a rack, fenders, lights, and a throttle.

Read the specification next to a Velowave or a Heybike at the same price and the RadCity looks distinctly ordinary. Similar money buys more amp hours, a bigger nominal motor rating, sometimes a torque sensor. If you rank bikes by spreadsheet, the RadCity loses.

That comparison misses what people are actually buying. An ebike is not a one-off purchase like a blender, it is a vehicle with consumable parts, a battery with a finite life and a proprietary controller. What matters at year four is whether anyone will sell you the part and whether anyone will fit it. That is the axis Rad competes on, and it is worth being clear-eyed about how much it is worth to you.

Build and support carries this score. Rad sells spare parts for its own bikes directly, publishes service documentation, and has a track record long enough that a five-year-old RadCity is still a supportable machine. Ride quality is held back by cadence sensing, which makes power delivery feel switched rather than proportional, and by a weight in the mid-60s. Range is solid rather than special: a roughly 670 Wh pack is competitive but not class-leading. Value scores lowest of the four because the sticker price sits above bikes with better paper specifications, and that gap is the price of everything else on this list.

What buying from the biggest brand actually buys you

Three concrete things, none of which appear on a spec sheet.

A parts supply chain. The failure mode that ends most cheap ebikes is not a crash, it is a dead controller, a cracked display or a battery that has lost half its capacity, on a bike whose importer has moved on to a new model with different parts. Rad sells its own spares directly and has done for years. That is the difference between a repair and a skip. It also means an independent shop can order the part rather than telling you they cannot help.

A service route. Rad has run mobile mechanics, company stores and partner shops at different points, and that footprint has been reorganised more than once, so verify what exists at your postcode rather than assuming national coverage. Where it exists, the value is that somebody else diagnoses the electrical fault. Diagnosing an intermittent cutout through a support chat window, with your bike in your garage, is genuinely miserable.

Documented failure modes. A bike sold in very large numbers over many years accumulates a public record. Forums know which connector corrodes, which bearing goes, which firmware version misbehaves. On a bike that has sold two thousand units, you are the test programme.

The short version The RadCity is a competent, heavy, cadence-sensor Class 2 commuter with better than average kit and an unremarkable spec sheet. Buy it because you want a bike you can still fix in 2032, not because the numbers beat the competition. If you would rather have the numbers, the money goes further elsewhere.

Weigh this honestly rather than romantically. How it rides, cadence sensing included

The RadCity is a classic upright city bike. Swept bars, a tall head tube, a saddle you sit on rather than perch on, and 27.5 inch wheels with a commuter tyre in the region of 2 inches wide. That geometry does two useful things: it puts your head up where drivers can see your face, and it makes low-speed manoeuvring easy, which matters on a bike this heavy.

The 27.5 inch wheel is an underrated choice in a market that has drifted towards 20 by 4 inch fat tyres. A larger diameter wheel rolls over a pothole edge at a shallower angle and loses less speed doing it, and a narrower commuter tyre at proper pressure has far less rolling resistance than a balloon tyre at 15 psi. On pavement, this is the faster and more efficient setup, and it is one of the quiet reasons the RadCity feels better than its motor rating suggests. Now the honest part. Rad has traditionally used cadence sensing on the RadCity, and cadence sensing has a characteristic feel that some riders never stop noticing. A ring of magnets on the crank tells the controller only whether the pedals are moving. Turn them and you get whatever power the assist level dictates, after a short delay. Stop and the power runs on for a beat. The bike does not care how hard you are pushing, so your gears become close to decorative and the assist buttons become the throttle.

Two things soften this. The RadCity has an actual throttle, so when you want fine control you use your thumb rather than fighting the sensor. And Rad tunes its assist levels conservatively, so the arrival of power is less startling than on some budget bikes. It is still a step behind the proportional feel of a torque sensor, which is the single clearest ride advantage a bike like the Aventon Level holds over it. Braking on a bike in the mid-60s carrying a rider and a load is not a place to economise. Motor, battery and what range to actually expect

The RadCity runs a geared rear hub motor in the 750W class, which is the legal ceiling for a compliant ebike in the United States. Geared hubs are the right choice here: the internal reduction lets a small motor produce useful torque at low wheel speeds, which is what you want pulling away from a light with groceries on the rack. What they cannot do is use your gears. A hub motor's speed is locked to the wheel, so on a long steep climb it falls out of its efficient range and starts making heat instead of progress. The battery is the number that predicts range, and the number to use is watt hours, not amp hours. A 48V 14Ah pack is 48 times 14, or roughly 670 Wh. Compare that figure across bikes and you are comparing like with like; compare amp hours across different voltages and you are comparing nothing. These are estimates derived from pack size and the power a heavy upright bike needs at city speeds, not measured results. A 220 lb rider, a headwind, cold weather or a hilly route will move every row down, sometimes by a third. The useful takeaway is the shape: the difference between the top and bottom rows is a factor of two and a half, and it is entirely under your right thumb. Cold weather is not a defect Lithium packs lose usable capacity below about 40F, often 20 to 30 percent of it, and they recover when they warm up. A winter commuter that suddenly shows two bars fewer is behaving normally. Store the pack indoors, charge it at room temperature, and do not leave it on the bike overnight in January.

Payload, frames and the kit that comes fitted

Rad quotes a total payload for the RadCity in the region of 275 lb, covering rider, cargo and anything on the rack together. That is a system limit set by the frame, wheels and brakes, not a marketing number, and it is one of the few specifications worth treating as a hard boundary. A 210 lb rider with a 25 lb load and a laptop is already close to it. The rear rack is rated separately, typically in the 50 to 55 lb range, which is enough for two loaded panniers and a week of shopping. The step-through frame deserves more respect than it usually gets. On a 65 lb bike with a loaded rack, swinging a leg over the saddle is the least stable moment of the whole ride, and it is where a lot of low-speed falls happen. A low standover removes that moment entirely. It is not a womens frame or a compromise for shorter riders, it is the better ergonomic choice for most people carrying anything. Lights are wired into the main battery, and a brake light in the rear unit is a genuinely useful safety feature on a bike that decelerates hard from 20 mph. Rad revises the RadCity between generations and the plus designation has covered more than one configuration, so confirm the motor, sensor type, brake type and battery size for the exact model in front of you rather than relying on any of these bands.

Who should buy it

Buy it if this bike is going to be transport. If it replaces car trips, carries shopping, gets ridden in weather and needs to still work in year five, the supportability argument is real money rather than sentiment. Buy it if you want a throttle, which the RadCity has and a great many bike-shop brands do not. Buy it if you want a step-through commuter that was designed as one rather than converted into one.

Buy something else if your priority is the specification per dollar. There is no version of this comparison where the RadCity wins on paper, and pretending otherwise would be dishonest. Buy something else if you need to keep pace with 35 mph traffic. The RadCity is Class 2, which means the motor stops helping at 20 mph, and no amount of pedalling makes a 65 lb upright bike comfortable above that.
