The Lightest Electric Bikes You Can Buy
Weight is almost irrelevant while you are riding and enormously relevant every other minute you own the bike. That mismatch is why so many people buy the wrong one.

Ask someone why they returned an electric bike and the answer is rarely about the motor. It is that they could not get it onto the car rack, or up the stairs to the flat, or back home the day the battery died two miles out. The bike worked. Living with the bike did not.
Weight is the spec buyers systematically underweight, and there is a structural reason. You evaluate a bike by riding it, and riding is the one activity where the motor hides the weight completely. A 65 lb ebike and a 35 lb ebike feel nearly identical rolling along at 18 mph on the flat. Every difference between them shows up when you stop.
This guide starts with the numbers, because how much electric bikes weigh is the question underneath most searches for the lightest one. Then it covers where the weight actually sits, the specific moments it hurts, and the trade-off that decides everything: lighter bikes carry smaller batteries.
How much electric bikes actually weigh
Manufacturers quote weight inconsistently, sometimes without battery, sometimes without pedals, and almost always for the smallest frame size. Assume the real bike you receive is 2 to 4 lb heavier than the number on the product page. Within that caveat, the categories sort cleanly.
- Folding and fat-tyre ebikes: 60 to 70 lb. The heaviest mainstream category by a wide margin. Fat tyres and rims are heavy, folding hinges add reinforcement, and these bikes usually carry large batteries. The irony of a folding bike being the hardest one to carry is not lost on anyone who has owned one.
- Mainstream commuters and cruisers: 50 to 60 lb. The bulk of the direct-to-consumer market. Aluminium frame, rear hub motor, 500 to 700 Wh battery, rack and mudguards, steel-heavy accessories.
- Mid-range hybrids and city bikes: 40 to 50 lb. Usually a mid-drive, a semi-integrated battery, lighter wheels and tyres, and fewer bolt-on accessories.
- Lightweight assist bikes: 30 to 40 lb. Carbon or high-grade aluminium frame, a small lightweight motor, and a smaller battery. This is where the bike starts behaving like a bicycle again with the power off.
- Premium carbon e-road: 25 to 30 lb. The lightest production ebikes. Carbon everything, hidden battery of 250 to 400 Wh, a motor delivering 35 to 50 Nm.
For context, an ordinary non-electric bike runs 18 to 30 lb depending on category and price. So the very lightest ebikes weigh about what a heavy conventional bike does, and a typical ebike weighs roughly twice what a typical bike does.
Where the weight actually lives
Four things account for nearly the whole difference between an ebike and its non-electric equivalent, and they do so in a fixed order.
1. The battery, and it is not close
Lithium ion cells store roughly 150 to 250 watt hours per kilogram at pack level once you include the casing, the management electronics, and the mounting hardware. That gives you a rule of thumb worth memorising: a battery weighs somewhere around 1 lb for every 50 watt hours of capacity.
So a 250 Wh pack is about 5 lb, a 500 Wh pack about 10 lb, and a 1,000 Wh dual-battery setup about 20 lb. That single relationship explains most of the weight spread in the whole ebike market, and it is why you cannot ask for a light bike with a huge battery. 2. The motor
A large geared rear hub motor is typically 7 to 9 lb. A full-power mid-drive is around 7 to 8 lb. A lightweight mid-drive designed for e-road and lightweight trail bikes comes in around 4 to 6 lb. Direct-drive hub motors, which are quieter and offer regeneration, are the heaviest of all at 10 lb and up.
The motor choice also drags weight around the bike in less obvious ways. A hub motor puts its mass in a wheel, which is the worst place for it, since rotating and unsprung weight affects handling more per pound than weight anywhere else. 3. The frame, built for torque it did not used to see
An ebike frame is not a bicycle frame with a battery added. It carries a motor applying torque at the bottom bracket or the rear axle, it carries more total mass, and it is ridden at higher average speeds. All three demand more material. Add the large opening in the down tube for the battery, which has to be compensated for with local reinforcement, and an ebike frame commonly weighs 1.5 to 3 lb more than the equivalent non-electric one in the same material.

4. Everything else, which adds up faster than expected
Heavier rims and tyres to carry the load. Bigger brake rotors and four-piston callipers. A rack, mudguards, integrated lights, a kickstand, and a bigger saddle. None of these is dramatic alone. Together they are commonly 6 to 10 lb, and they are the reason two bikes with the same motor and battery can differ by that much.
The moments weight actually bites
This is the part test rides never reveal, so it is worth being specific.
Lifting onto a car rack. The most common breaking point. Hitch racks frequently limit each tray to around 60 lb, and a fat-tyre ebike can exceed that with accessories fitted. Even where the rack takes it, hoisting 65 lb to chest height at arm's length is a genuinely difficult movement, and awkward rather than heavy is what hurts backs. Ebike-specific racks with ramps exist precisely because of this, and they are heavy and expensive themselves.
Getting it into a boot. A folding ebike sounds like the answer until you try to lift 60 lb of folded bike over a bumper lip. Folding solves volume, not mass.
Carrying up steps. If you live above ground level without a lift, this is a daily tax. A 35 lb bike goes up a flight over a shoulder without much thought. A 60 lb bike is a two-handed, two-stage operation that gets old within a fortnight, and it is the single most common reason apartment dwellers stop riding.
Catching it when it leans. At a stop, a bike tipping past about fifteen degrees has to be caught by your arm, and the force scales with the weight. This is where heavy bikes actually cause injuries, and it disproportionately affects smaller and older riders. Pushing it home with a flat battery. Every ebike owner does this once. A 30 lb bike with the power off is a slightly heavy bicycle you can pedal home in a low gear. A 65 lb bike with a hub motor and a dead battery is closer to a shopping trolley, and if the terrain is hilly you will be walking. This one moment converts more people to lightweight ebikes than any marketing does.
Travelling with it. Air freight and courier pricing scales with both weight and dimensional volume, and lithium batteries above 300 Wh face shipping restrictions of their own. A light bike with a small battery is dramatically easier to move between places than a heavy one, and cheaper every time.
Weight and range are two ends of one lever
You cannot optimise both, and understanding why makes the whole category simpler.
Since a pack weighs roughly 1 lb per 50 Wh, every pound you remove from the battery costs you around 50 Wh of stored energy. A reasonable planning figure for real-world consumption on a mixed route at moderate assist is 15 to 25 Wh per mile, higher for a heavy bike, a heavy rider, hills, or headwinds. So each pound of battery is worth roughly 2 to 3 miles of range.
Run that through the categories and the picture is stark. A 30 lb lightweight e-road bike with a 320 Wh battery has a realistic 25 to 40 miles at moderate assist. A 60 lb commuter with a 700 Wh battery has 40 to 65. The heavy bike is not badly designed, it simply made the other choice.
There are two ways around the trade-off, and both are partial. The first is a range extender, a small auxiliary battery that mounts in a bottle cage and typically adds 150 to 250 Wh for 3 to 5 lb. This lets you carry weight only on the days you need distance, which is genuinely clever. The second is riding a light bike at lower assist, which works because a lighter bike needs less energy per mile in the first place. Neither closes the gap fully. What a light ebike gives you
- You can actually lift it onto a rack, into a boot, or up stairs
- It rides like a bicycle with the motor off, so a dead battery is not a crisis
- Better handling, especially at low speed and when stopping
- Less strain when catching a lean, which matters most for smaller riders
- Cheaper and simpler to ship, fly with, or take on a train
What you give up
- Smaller battery, so 20 to 40 percent less range in most comparisons
- Usually lower motor torque, so steep loaded climbs need your legs
- Rarely comes with racks, mudguards, or a strong kickstand
- Lower payload ratings, so less carrying capacity
- Costs more, sometimes much more, for the same capability

Note the folding row. It carries a mid-sized battery, weighs near the top of the table, and returns the shortest range of the lot, because small wheels and upright riding are inefficient. Folding buys you volume and nothing else, which surprises a lot of first-time buyers.
Four ways to buy a genuinely light ebike
These are archetypes rather than single models, since specific bikes and prices move around. Weights are complete-bike bands including battery, for a mid-size frame.
Carbon e-road bike, hidden battery
- Roughly 25 to 30 lb complete
- 250 to 400 Wh internal battery
- Lightweight mid-drive, 35 to 50 Nm
- Optional range extender in the bottle cage
The lightest thing you can actually order, and the only ebike category that rides properly with the motor off. Lightweight aluminium assist hybrid
- Roughly 33 to 40 lb complete
- 350 to 500 Wh battery
- Small mid-drive, 40 to 60 Nm
- Flat bar, room for mudguards and a rack
The most sensible answer for most people who want a light bike. You give up a few pounds against a carbon e-road bike and save several thousand dollars, and you get a bike you can fit accessories to. Under 40 lb is the threshold where carrying up stairs stops being a chore.
Single-speed or belt-drive lightweight city ebike
- Roughly 30 to 38 lb complete
- 250 to 400 Wh battery
- Small rear hub or lightweight mid-drive
- Belt drive, so it will not mark your clothes or wall
Built around exactly the constraints of flat living: light enough to shoulder, clean enough to keep indoors, and simple enough to need almost no maintenance. Range is modest, so it suits short urban trips rather than long ones. More on the drivetrain in the belt drive guide.
Lightweight bike plus range extender
- Roughly 32 to 40 lb base weight
- 400 Wh internal plus 150 to 250 Wh extender
- Extender adds 3 to 5 lb only when fitted
- Carry the weight only on long days
The closest thing to having both. On short days the bike is light. On long days you accept a few pounds and gain most of a heavy bike's range. The catch is that extenders are model-specific and rarely cheap, so check availability for your exact bike before assuming this option exists.
Who should put weight first
Some riders can ignore weight entirely. If your bike lives in a ground-floor garage, you never rack it, and you ride flat routes within battery range, buy the heavy bike with the big battery and enjoy it. For everyone else, the priority order looks like this.
- Apartment dwellers without a lift. The highest priority of anyone on this list. Every ride begins and ends with a staircase, and the difference between 35 and 60 lb decides whether you ride at all.
- Anyone using a car rack. Rack tray limits and the lift itself both cap you. Under 50 lb makes life easy, and under 40 lb makes it trivial.
- Smaller and lighter riders. The catch-the-lean problem scales with the ratio of bike weight to rider weight. A 60 lb bike is proportionally a very different object for a 120 lb rider than for a 200 lb one.
- Older riders. Not because of strength on the pedals, which the motor handles, but because of the sudden loaded movements: catching a tip, lifting over a kerb, backing the bike out of a shed.
- Anyone riding hilly terrain at the edge of their range. The failure mode is being far from home with no assist. A light bike degrades into a rideable bicycle. A heavy one does not.
- Anyone who travels with a bike. Weight and battery capacity both drive shipping cost and restrictions.
How to shop for a light ebike without getting burned
Weight is the spec most casually reported in this industry, so verify it.
- Ask which frame size the quoted weight refers to, and whether it includes the battery, pedals, and kickstand. Those four items can swing a figure by 5 lb.
- Convert the battery capacity to pounds using the 50 Wh per pound rule and check it against the quoted weight. If a bike claims 35 lb with a 700 Wh battery and a hub motor, the arithmetic does not work and the number is wrong.
- Check the payload rating, not just the bike weight. Light frames often have lower total system weight limits, typically 250 to 300 lb including rider and cargo. Exceeding it voids warranties and stresses wheels.
- Do the stair test in the shop. Pick the bike up by the top tube and hold it. Ten seconds tells you more than any review.
- Check whether a range extender exists for that exact model, and what it costs. It changes the calculation entirely.
- Confirm the class of the bike before you commit, since light assist bikes are usually Class 1 with no throttle. If you wanted a throttle, that is a different bike. Our class guide spells out what each one allows.
