American Made Electric Bikes
Almost no ebike is fully made in the USA, and the brands know it. Here is the tier system that tells you what a claim is worth, and which tier is worth paying for.

Type "American made electric bike" into a search bar and you get a list of brands making a claim that ranges from literally true to almost entirely decorative. The word doing the heavy lifting is usually "made," and the sentence it appears in usually turns out to be about a warehouse in Nevada rather than a welding shop in Michigan.
This is not a scandal, and it is not a reason to distrust the brands doing it. It is a supply chain fact. But it does mean the phrase is useless as a shopping filter unless you break it into pieces. Doing that is worth the effort, because one of those pieces genuinely changes your ownership experience and the rest mostly do not.
Why nothing is 100 percent American
An ebike is a bicycle with an electrical system bolted to it, and the two halves have different manufacturing stories.
The bicycle half can be made domestically. Steel, aluminum, and carbon frames get built in the US every day by shops in Michigan, Tennessee, Arkansas, Montana, and New York. Wheels can be laced here. Assembly is straightforward to do here.
The electrical half essentially cannot. Lithium-ion cell production is concentrated in China, South Korea, and Japan, with a small and growing US share aimed almost entirely at automotive. Hub motors, mid-drives, controllers, and displays come from a short list of Asian suppliers that sell to every brand in the industry, including the premium European ones. So do derailleurs, hydraulic brakes, and most of the cockpit. A brand that welds its own frames in Ohio is still buying the same motor family as a brand that imports complete bikes.
That is why the interesting question is not "is this American made." It is "which parts of this bike, and this company, are here, and what does that get me."
The four tiers
Tier 1: US-welded frame, US assembly
The frame is fabricated in a domestic shop and the complete bike is built up here. This group is genuinely small, mostly consists of long-running builders who were making bicycles before ebikes existed, and it is expensive. Expect $4,000 and up for a complete bike, and often more, because small-batch frame building carries labor costs that Asian volume production does not. What you are paying for is frame craftsmanship, repairability, and typically a much more direct relationship with the people who built it. What you are not paying for is better electronics, because the electronics are the same.
Tier 2: Imported frame, US assembly, US service and warranty
Frames and components arrive from Asia, and the bike is built, quality-checked, and shipped from a US facility, with warranty and service run by people in the same country as the customer. This is the largest meaningful "American" group and the one most brands mean when they say assembled in the USA. It is also, for most buyers, the practical win. Final assembly done by someone accountable to the brand catches the problems that make cheap direct-to-consumer bikes miserable: untorqued stems, badly dished wheels, brakes that were never bled, derailleurs shipped out of adjustment.
Tier 3: Fully imported, US office and support
Complete bikes arrive from overseas and go straight into a US warehouse. The company itself is American: US headquarters, US phone number, US warranty administration, US parts inventory. Most of the big American ebike brands live here. The bike is not made here in any sense, but the support is real, and for a warranty claim that is what you interact with.
Tier 4: Fully imported, offshore support
The bike ships from overseas or from a third-party fulfillment warehouse, the brand exists mainly as a storefront, and warranty support runs through email with a team in another time zone. Prices here are the lowest in the market and the bikes are often mechanically fine on arrival. The risk is entirely on the back end, and it is concentrated in exactly one place. The three-year battery test
Here is the scenario that separates the tiers in practice, and it is the only scenario worth designing your purchase around.
It is three years after you bought the bike. The battery still charges but holds maybe 65 percent of its original capacity, which is normal after 500 or so cycles. You want a replacement pack. Batteries are Class 9 dangerous goods and cannot travel by air, so every replacement pack moves by ocean freight and then by ground. That constraint is physical, not a policy choice.
- Tier 1 and 2: the company holds packs in a US warehouse. A replacement arrives by ground in days. If your model is discontinued, a domestic builder can often adapt a current pack to your mount.
- Tier 3: usually the same outcome, because the US office keeps spares. The variable is whether they still stock your generation. Big brands change battery mounts more often than they admit.
- Tier 4: the honest answer is often that no pack exists for your bike anymore. A proprietary downtube battery with no domestic inventory turns a $1,200 bike into a $1,200 loss, and third-party rebuilders charge $400 to $700 to reuse your case.
Apply the same test to a controller, a display, a proprietary rear rack, or a motor. The pattern holds. This is why the tier that matters most is the one describing where the parts and warranty live, not the one describing where the tubes were welded. Worksman has been building bicycles in New York since the 1890s, mostly industrial machines for factories and campuses, and the electric versions carry that DNA: heavy steel, enormous load capacity, and parts you can still get in fifteen years. This is what a genuine domestic frame purchase looks like. It is not light, it is not fast, and it will not impress anyone on a group ride. It will still be working when three generations of direct-to-consumer bikes have been recycled.

Tier 2 done properly. The frame comes from Asia like almost every frame does, and the bike is built up and checked by people in Oregon before it ships. The belt drive is the tell that this is a considered build rather than a spec-sheet exercise: it costs more, it lasts longer, and it means the bike arrives without a derailleur that needs adjusting. If the thing you want from "American" is someone accountable who touched your specific bike, this is the tier.

Tier 3, and a good argument for why tier 3 is not a consolation prize. The bikes are made in Asia and nobody at Rad pretends otherwise. What you get instead is scale: a Seattle office, a phone number that a person answers, a parts store on the website with individual components listed, and a service partner network that means a local shop can order the right part. For a large share of buyers that combination is worth more than a domestic weld.

At the price where most bikes fall into tier 4, Lectric operates like tier 3. The bikes come from overseas, but the company holds inventory in Arizona and sells individual replacement parts, which is the difference between a repairable bike and a disposable one. The row that never changes is the motor and cell row. No tier gets you American electronics at any price, and any brand implying otherwise is describing an aspiration.
Why people search for this, and whether it holds up
Four motivations show up repeatedly. They deserve honest answers rather than flattery.
Supporting domestic manufacturing
This one is straightforward and it works, with a caveat about proportion. A tier 1 purchase directly funds skilled fabrication jobs in the US. A tier 2 purchase funds assembly, quality control, and service jobs, which are real jobs even though they are not fabrication. A tier 3 purchase funds an American company's payroll while the manufacturing value stays overseas. All three are defensible. They are just different sizes of the same gesture, and it is worth knowing which one you are making.
Tariffs and supply chain risk
Legitimate, and increasingly the practical reason rather than the ideological one. Import duty rates on bicycles, frames, and battery packs have moved repeatedly and unpredictably, and brands with domestic assembly and inventory absorb those swings better than brands shipping complete bikes on demand. That translates to fewer stockouts and steadier prices, not necessarily to lower prices.
Quality assumptions
This is the one that does not hold up. Country of assembly is a weak proxy for quality. Taiwan has been the world's premium bicycle manufacturing center for forty years and builds frames for essentially every high-end brand you can name. Chinese factories build everything from excellent to appalling, and the difference is the buyer's specification and QC budget, not the address. Meanwhile a small domestic operation can and sometimes does ship bikes with sloppy wheel builds. Judge the parts, the warranty terms, and the battery certification. UL 2849 certification tells you more about safety than any flag on the box.
Wanting someone to answer the phone
This is the strongest reason of the four, and it is served by tier 2 and tier 3 equally well. Nothing about domestic frame welding makes a support team better. What makes support good is US inventory, published parts pricing, a service partner network, and a company large enough to still exist when you call. Judge those directly.
What a US-built or US-assembled bike buys you

- More insulation from tariff swings and shipping disruption
- Direct support for domestic fabrication, assembly, or service jobs
What it does not
- American motors, controllers, or battery cells, at any price
- Any guarantee of better build quality than a good Taiwanese factory
- A lower price, since domestic labor usually costs more
- Lighter or faster bikes; the electronics are identical across tiers
How to verify a claim in five minutes
Marketing pages are written to survive scrutiny they do not expect to receive. Give them some.
- Ask where the frame is welded. Not where the bike is "made," not where the company is based. Name of the shop, city, state. A tier 1 builder answers instantly and usually with photos. Anyone else will redirect to assembly, which is a useful answer in itself.
- Ask where warranty service happens. Specifically: if the motor fails in month 14, who diagnoses it and where does the replacement ship from. Vague answers here are the reddest flag in the process.
- Look for a phone number. A real one, on the contact page, with published hours. Call it before you buy and see who picks up and how long it takes. This takes three minutes and predicts your entire ownership experience.
- Look for a parts store on the site. Individual batteries, controllers, displays, and racks listed with prices and stock status is the strongest available signal that a company intends to support the bike. Its absence is the strongest signal that it does not.
- Read the fine print on the claim. "Designed in California," "engineered in Colorado," and "proudly American" are all true statements about a bike built entirely overseas. They are not lies. They are just not manufacturing claims, and the phrasing is chosen carefully.
- Check the battery certification. UL 2849 for the full electrical system, or UL 2271 for the pack alone. This is unrelated to country of origin and matters more than any of it.
Which tier you should actually buy
Match the tier to what you actually want out of the purchase.
- You want the frame itself built here and the budget allows it: tier 1. Go in knowing the electronics are imported and that you are buying craftsmanship and repairability, not performance.
- You want the best practical outcome for the money: tier 2. US assembly plus US warranty support is where the ownership experience improves measurably, and the price premium over a comparable import is modest.
- You want reliable support and a mainstream price: tier 3. A large US company with real parts inventory beats a small domestic builder on every support metric except personal attention.
- You are buying at the bottom of the market: tier 4 is where you will land, so pick the vendor with the best parts availability rather than the best spec sheet, and budget for the battery being unobtainable in a few years.
The unglamorous conclusion is that supply chains are global and will stay that way, and that a bike assembled and supported in the US with imported parts is usually the better buy than a slightly more American bike with worse support. If you want the domestic frame, buy it for the frame, which is a good reason on its own.
