Specialized Electric Bikes: The Full Turbo Range Explained

Six model families, an SL version of most of them, and trim numbers layered on top. The naming looks chaotic until you see the two questions it is answering.

Specialized calls every electric bike it makes a Turbo. Turbo Levo, Turbo Kenevo, Turbo Creo, Turbo Vado, Turbo Como, Turbo Tero, plus SL versions of most of those, plus trim numbers running from 3.0 up to S-Works. Two bikes in the range can share three quarters of their name and have almost nothing in common: a Turbo Levo and a Turbo Levo SL are different frames, different motors, different batteries, and about fifteen pounds apart.

That is genuinely confusing on a product page, and it is the main reason people end up buying the wrong one. The good news is that the naming is systematic. Every Specialized ebike name answers two questions in order: what kind of bike is this, and how much motor does it have. Get those two straight and the rest of the lineup falls into place in about five minutes.

What follows is a map of the range by category rather than a spec sheet. Specialized revises motors, batteries and trim structures often enough that any torque figure or price quoted here would be stale within a year, so treat the numbers below as bands and confirm the exact spec on the model you are looking at.

The short version The family name tells you the body style: Levo and Kenevo are mountain bikes, Creo is drop bar, Vado is a fast flat-bar commuter, Como is upright and comfortable, Tero is the do-anything hybrid. SL means Specialized Lightweight: less torque and a smaller battery, in a bike that weighs far less and rides like a normal bicycle. No SL in the name means full power, big torque, big battery, and a lot more weight.

How the Turbo naming actually works

There are three parts to any Specialized ebike name and they do separate jobs.

Turbo just means electric. It carries no information beyond that, which is why nobody says it out loud.

The family name is the body style and the intended terrain. This is the part that matters most and the part buyers skip.

SL, or its absence, is the power platform. This is the second most important word in the name and the one that trips people up hardest, because an SL bike and its full-power namesake are not trim levels of each other. They are separate bikes that happen to share a family name.

The trim number comes last: 3.0, 4.0, 5.0, then Comp, Expert, Pro and S-Works on the performance families. Higher numbers buy better forks, better brakes, better drivetrains, lighter frame materials and sometimes a bigger battery. On most families the trim number does not change peak motor output, though battery capacity and frame material often do move with it, so check the specific trim rather than assuming.

One more wrinkle worth knowing: EQ on the end of a name generally signals the equipped version, meaning fenders, rack and integrated lights fitted from the factory. On a commuter that package is worth real money bought separately, and it is usually specced to fit properly, which aftermarket racks on an ebike often do not.

SL versus full power: the decision that actually matters

Everything else in the Specialized range is a preference. This one changes what the bike is.

The full-power bikes use a mid-drive motor developed with the German manufacturer Brose and badged as Specialized. Peak torque on the current generation sits in the region of 90 Nm and upward, which is enough to climb a loose fire road at walking cadence while you sit down. Internal batteries on these bikes are large, commonly in the 500 to 800 Wh region depending on family and trim.

The SL bikes use a smaller motor designed in house. Peak torque is typically somewhere around a third to a half of the full-power figure, and the internal battery is deliberately small, often around half the capacity. On paper that reads like a worse bike. In practice it is a different one.

The weight difference is the point. A full-power Levo lands somewhere in the low fifties of pounds. A Levo SL lands in the high thirties to mid forties. A full-power Vado is often close to 60 lb; a Vado SL can be in the mid thirties. That is not a spec-sheet distinction, it is the difference between a bike you can lift onto a roof rack and one you cannot, and between a bike that handles like a bicycle when the battery is empty and one that handles like a dead scooter.

The SL motor also feels different. It amplifies what you put in rather than replacing it, so the bike accelerates in proportion to your effort. Riders coming from unpowered bikes usually prefer it immediately. Riders who want the motor to do the work usually find it underwhelming, and they are not wrong to. If your reason for buying an ebike is that a specific hill defeats you, buy full power.

Turbo Levo and Turbo Kenevo: the dirt side

The Levo is the bike that made Specialized a serious force in electric mountain bikes, and it remains the volume seller. It is a full-suspension trail bike with modern geometry, a full-power motor, and a large internal battery. Specialized has generally used the Levo to introduce its newest motor and battery hardware first, so it tends to be the most current bike in the range.

The Levo SL is the same idea executed around the lightweight platform. It looks much closer to an unpowered trail bike, weighs far less, and is the one to buy if you already ride mountain bikes well and want more laps rather than easier ones. There has also usually been a hardtail Levo in the lineup at a lower price, which is the cheapest way into the family and a perfectly sensible bike for fire roads and flowing singletrack.

Kenevo is the gravity end: longer travel, slacker angles, heavier build, aimed at bike park laps and steep technical descending. Kenevo SL is not a lighter trim of the Kenevo but its own bike, built on the lightweight platform with enduro travel, and it is one of the more interesting things Specialized makes. All of these are set up as pedal assist without a throttle, which keeps them in the category most trail systems permit. Turbo Creo: the drop-bar one

Creo is the road and gravel family, and it exists only on the lightweight platform. That is a deliberate decision rather than a gap in the range. A full-power motor and a 700 Wh battery would produce a drop-bar bike weighing close to 50 lb, which handles nothing like a road bike and defeats the purpose of drop bars in the first place.

A Creo weighs somewhere in the high twenties to low thirties of pounds depending on trim and frame material. That is heavy for a road bike and remarkably light for an ebike. Ridden with the assist off, it behaves like a slightly overbuilt endurance bike rather than a machine you are dragging around.

The rider this suits is specific: someone who already rides road or gravel, and who wants to keep riding with a faster group, keep riding after an injury, or keep riding in hillier terrain than their legs currently allow. It is not a good first bicycle, and it is a poor commuter compared with a Vado at half the price. Turbo Vado, Como and Tero: the road-going three

These three account for most of the Specialized ebikes you actually see locked outside offices, and they are easy to tell apart once you know what each is optimising for.

Turbo Vado

Flat bar, fairly aggressive fitness geometry, and in the US commonly configured to assist up to 28 mph. This is the commuting and distance bike: fast, efficient, and comfortable in a slightly forward-leaning position. Full-power Vados are heavy and untroubled by it. The Vado SL is the more interesting bike for many people, because a commuter that weighs in the mid thirties is one you will carry into a flat or lift onto a hitch rack without resenting it.

Turbo Como

Upright riding position, swept-back bars, wide saddle, and a low step-through frame on most builds. Como trades speed and efficiency for a position that puts no weight on your hands and lets you put a foot down flat at a light. It is the model for riders returning to cycling after a long gap, and for anyone whose priority is comfort over pace. A Como SL exists for the same weight reasons as elsewhere in the range.

Turbo Tero

The hybrid that will handle a canal towpath, a gravel shortcut, or a rutted park path without complaint: wider tyres, a suspension fork, and mounting points for racks and fenders. The more capable Tero variants push further toward light off-road use. If your commute is not entirely paved, this is usually the right answer rather than a Vado with tougher tyres.

Weights are approximate and move with frame size, trim, frame material and whether the bike ships with rack and fenders. Price bands are entry points for each family rather than fixed figures. Both change with every model year, so treat the table as a map of where each bike sits relative to the others rather than a current price list.

What owning a Specialized ebike is actually like

You are buying a dealer, not just a bike

Specialized sells through bike shops. You can order online, but delivery and setup route through a dealer, and warranty work goes through one too. Against a direct-to-consumer brand, you are paying somewhere between several hundred and a couple of thousand dollars more for a comparable specification. What that premium buys is a physical place that can diagnose a motor fault, order a warranty replacement, and hand the bike back working.

Whether that is worth it depends almost entirely on how far your nearest dealer is. Fifteen minutes away, it is a strong argument. Two hours away, it is a liability, because a fault that a direct-to-consumer brand would solve by mailing you a part becomes a day of driving with a 55 lb bike in the back of a car.

The drive system is sealed and proprietary

Specialized motors are not Bosch or Shimano units you can take anywhere. They are proprietary, sealed, and serviced through Specialized software. There is no aftermarket controller, no generic replacement, and no independent repair scene of any size. Firmware updates and assist tuning run through the company's Mission Control app, which is genuinely good software and lets you shape how much power each assist level delivers rather than accepting three presets.

The practical consequence is that everything electrical is a dealer job and everything mechanical is not. Brakes, tyres, chains, cassettes, bearings and suspension are standard bicycle parts that any competent shop can service. That split is worth understanding before you assume you are locked in on everything.

Before you compare trims, find your nearest Specialized dealer, call them, and ask whether they do motor and battery warranty work in house or ship bikes away. Batteries and the range extender

Packs are proprietary and integrated into the down tube. Replacement is a dealer purchase at dealer prices, which on a large full-power pack is a significant fraction of a cheap ebike. The range extender is the neat part of the SL concept. It is a bottle-shaped auxiliary battery that sits in a normal cage and plugs into the charge port, adding capacity for the days you need it and staying at home the rest of the time. It is a better answer than fitting a permanently larger battery, because you only carry the weight when the ride justifies it. Resale

This is the quiet advantage and it is real. Used Specialized ebikes hold value better than most, for three connected reasons: the brand is recognised by people who do not follow the industry, a buyer can get the bike serviced anywhere Specialized is sold, and parts stay available years after a model is discontinued. Direct-to-consumer bikes struggle on all three counts, and a used one with an out-of-production motor is close to unsellable.

Factor that into the price comparison rather than treating it as a bonus. A bike that costs $1,500 more and returns $1,000 more in three years is a different proposition from one that simply costs more. How to decide

Answer the two questions in the same order the name does.

First, what terrain? Singletrack and trail centres means Levo. Steep, technical, lift-served or shuttled riding means Kenevo. Drop bars and road or gravel means Creo. Paved commuting and distance means Vado. Comfort, upright position and step-through means Como. Mixed surfaces and general utility means Tero.

Second, SL or full power? Choose full power if a specific climb currently defeats you, if you weigh more than average, if you tow or carry cargo, or if you want the motor to do the work. Choose SL if you already ride, if you have to lift or store the bike, if range anxiety bothers you less than weight does, or if the reason you have not bought an ebike is that they feel like appliances.

Only then look at trim numbers, and be honest about what they buy. Moving up a trim generally gets you a better fork, better brakes, and a lighter frame material. Those matter most on the mountain bikes and least on the Como, where nobody is going to notice a carbon frame under an upright rider on balloon tyres.
