Electric Cargo Bikes: Choosing Between a Longtail and a Front Loader
The shape of the bike decides how you will live with it, more than the motor or the battery does. Get that decision right and the rest is a spec sheet exercise.

An electric cargo bike is the only ebike category that regularly replaces a car rather than a gym membership. That is the appeal, and it is real: two children, a week of shopping, and a work bag all fit, and the motor makes the resulting 400 lb rolling weight manageable in a way that an unassisted cargo bike never was.
The decision that matters is not motor wattage or claimed range. It is the shape. Longtail, front loader, and mid-tail are three different vehicles that happen to share a category name, and they suit genuinely different lives. Choosing the wrong shape produces a bike that lives in the garage because parking it is annoying, or one that cannot do the job you bought it for.
Everything else follows from that choice, so start there and work outward.
Longtail, front loader, mid-tail
Longtail
The rear triangle is stretched, usually adding 12 to 20 inches behind the seat tube, and the cargo sits over and behind the rear wheel on an extended deck. Total length typically runs 78 to 85 inches, against about 68 for a normal bike.
The reason longtails dominate the American market is that they are the easiest to live with. The steering is direct, so the bike handles like a slightly long bicycle rather than something new. Weight sits low and behind you, which is stable in a straight line. They fit in most sheds, most lift lobbies, and most bike racks. Getting on and off is normal.
The limits are real too. You cannot see the children behind you, only hear them. Loading a heavy or awkward object onto a rear deck at hip height is worse than dropping it into a box. And a load that is high and behind you makes the bike feel top heavy at walking pace, especially when you are pushing it rather than riding.
Front loader, long john, bakfiets
A box sits between the rider and the front wheel, low to the ground, and the steering reaches the fork through a rod or cable linkage running under the box. Length is typically 95 to 105 inches, which is a genuinely large object.
Everything about the load is better. The box floor sits maybe 12 inches off the ground, so the mass is far lower than on a longtail and the bike feels planted rather than tippy. You can see and talk to your children. You can drop in a bag of cement, a dog, or a folded stroller without lifting it to hip height. Rain covers turn the box into a dry cabin, which is why these bikes dominate in Northern Europe.
The costs are also everything you would expect. Linkage steering has slack and a different feel, and it takes practice before slow-speed manoeuvring stops being alarming. The bike is heavy, often 75 to 100 lb before cargo. Turning circles are large. And storage is the killer: a 100 inch bike does not fit a standard garden shed, will not go up steps, and cannot be lifted onto most car racks. Before you fall in love with one, measure where it will actually live.
Mid-tail
A shorter longtail, usually 72 to 78 inches, with a rack sized for one child seat plus panniers or two smaller children on a bench. It is the compromise shape, and it exists for two specific reasons: riders under about 5 foot 4 who find a full longtail unwieldy to hold up at a stop, and households where storage is measured in inches. Shorter also means lighter, usually by 8 to 15 lb, which matters every time you move the bike without riding it.
You give up the ability to carry two growing children comfortably. A mid-tail that handles two five-year-olds beautifully will be tight with two nine-year-olds. If you are buying for children who will grow, be honest about the horizon. Payload is the first filter, and most people get it wrong
Manufacturers publish a gross vehicle weight rating or a total payload figure. Payload normally means everything the bike carries including the rider. GVWR includes the bike itself. Check which one you are reading, because the difference is 60 to 100 lb.
Add up your real load: rider, then each passenger, then seats and accessories at 5 to 10 lb each, then the shopping. A 175 lb parent, two children at 45 and 55 lb, two child seats at 8 lb each, and 25 lb of groceries is 316 lb. Many cargo bikes rate 400 to 440 lb of payload, which sounds like plenty until you notice that the number has to hold for the next five years while the children grow.
Two things happen when you exceed the rating, and neither is dramatic in the moment. Braking distances lengthen, and spokes start to fatigue at the elbow. The first thing that fails on an overloaded cargo bike is almost always the rear wheel, and it usually fails as a broken spoke that pulls the wheel out of true rather than as a sudden collapse. That is still a bad thing to happen with children aboard.
Why a mid-drive is close to mandatory here
On a normal ebike, hub versus mid-drive is a genuine trade-off with reasonable arguments both ways. On a loaded cargo bike it mostly stops being one.
The reason is where a cargo bike spends its time. Pulling away from a junction with 320 lb aboard, then grinding up a driveway at 4 mph, are low-speed high-torque situations. A hub motor is bolted directly to the wheel, so its gearing is fixed and it produces its useful torque in a fairly narrow rpm band well above walking pace. Below that, it heats up and delivers less than the sticker suggests. A mid-drive drives the chain, so it goes through the cassette, and dropping to a low gear multiplies its torque exactly the way it multiplies yours.
In practice this shows up as three things: a mid-drive cargo bike starts on a hill without lurching, holds a steady speed on a long climb instead of fading, and does not get hot on the school run. The mechanism is explained further in mid-drive versus hub motor.
Hub-drive cargo bikes are not a mistake. If your area is genuinely flat and your typical load is one child and shopping, a good 750W hub bike does the job for roughly half the money. Just be honest about your local topography, and understand that you are buying the version that struggles on the day you are most tired.
Torque is the number to compare, not watts. Family cargo mid-drives generally sit between 65 and 85 Nm, and the difference between 65 and 85 is noticeable with two children aboard. Watts tell you about top speed; torque tells you about starting from rest on a hill, which is what a cargo bike does all day.
The hardware that carries the mass
Brakes
Kinetic energy scales with mass, so a 400 lb loaded cargo bike at 18 mph carries roughly twice the energy of a 200 lb rider and bike at the same speed, and the brakes have to turn all of it into heat. Four-piston hydraulic disc brakes with 180 mm or 203 mm rotors are the right specification. Two-piston hydraulics on 160 mm rotors are the point at which you should walk away, and mechanical discs on a family cargo bike are not acceptable.
The failure mode to worry about is fade on a long descent, where the rotor gets hot enough that the pads lose bite progressively. Bigger rotors are the fix because they have more mass and more surface area to shed heat. There is more on pad compounds and rotor sizing in our brakes guide.
Wheels and tires
Look for 12 or 13 gauge spokes, a high spoke count at the rear, and a wide double-wall rim. Many cargo bikes use 20 inch rear wheels specifically because a smaller wheel with shorter spokes is stronger and stiffer under load, which is the same physics that makes folding bike wheels tough.
Tires want a puncture protection belt and a load rating that suits the bike. Running them at the pressure printed on the sidewall is more important on a cargo bike than anywhere else, because an underinflated tire under heavy load pinch-flats and squirms in corners. Details in tires and wheels.
The double kickstand is a safety component
This looks like a minor spec and is not. A centre-mounted double kickstand lifts the rear wheel slightly and holds the bike upright and level on both sides, so you can load a child into a seat without the bike leaning away from you. A single side stand on a cargo bike means the bike tips as soon as a child leans, which is how loading accidents happen.
Test the stand in the shop with weight on the rack. It should deploy with a foot without you having to haul the bike backwards, it should hold on a slight slope, and it should not fold under a sideways push. A wobbly stand on a 70 lb bike with a child in the seat is genuinely dangerous.
Frame stiffness under a moving load
A cargo bike's load is not static. A child shifts, a crate slides, and the resulting side load twists the frame. A flexible cargo frame produces a slow speed wobble that riders describe as the bike feeling alive underneath them, and it is worst at exactly the moment you least want it, which is at 5 mph while turning into a driveway.
You can feel this on a test ride if you load the bike. Ride at walking pace and swing the bars gently left and right. A stiff frame follows immediately. A flexible one lags and then catches up. Manufacturers address it with larger diameter tubes, a second lower tube running the length of the tail, and on front loaders with a triangulated box frame.
Carrying children
The rules change with age, and getting them wrong is the one mistake in this article with real consequences.
- Under about 9 to 12 months: not on a bike. Infants cannot support their own head against road vibration and cannot wear a helmet that fits. Most manufacturers and paediatric guidance set the floor at around 12 months, and a front loader box with a proper infant insert is the only sensible option even then.
- Roughly 1 to 4 years: a moulded child seat with a five-point harness, high back, and head support. On a longtail this bolts to the rear deck. In a front loader box, use the fitted harness points rather than an aftermarket seat.
- Roughly 4 to 8 years: a bench or padded deck with a backrest and a lap belt, plus grab handles and footrests. This is where longtails are at their best.
- 8 and up: deck, footrests, and a handhold. At this age the main issue is total weight rather than restraint.
Footrests and wheel guards are not optional at any age. A foot going into the rear spokes is the classic and serious cargo bike injury, and it happens when a child falls asleep and their leg drops. Every seat position needs a footrest that supports the whole foot, plus a guard or skirt covering the spokes from the deck down.
Helmets for every passenger, every trip, including the short one. And practise the loading routine before it matters: kickstand down, bike stable, oldest child on first at the back, youngest last, buckle each harness before you touch the bike. The GSD is the bike that proved a cargo bike does not have to be enormous. The box floor is low enough that the loaded bike feels stable rather than top heavy, the foam construction keeps weight down for the size, and with a rain tent it turns a wet school run into a non-event. The Abound is the sensible pick for a smaller rider or a household with one child and a tight garage. The low standover and adjustable cockpit mean you can get a foot down confidently with weight on the back, which is the thing that puts people off full-length longtails. The trade is capacity: this is a one-child bike that will carry a second at a squeeze, not a two-child bike.

The car replacement maths, honestly
Cargo bike marketing leans hard on replacing a car, and it can genuinely happen. It is worth doing the arithmetic rather than accepting the slogan.
The case for it is strong when you are removing a second car. In the United States, running a second car costs somewhere in the region of $6,000 to $10,000 a year once you include depreciation, insurance, fuel, maintenance, and parking, and the number is higher in a city. A $5,000 cargo bike with $300 a year in servicing and a battery replacement somewhere between year four and year seven pays that back quickly, and it keeps paying.
The case is much weaker when you are adding a cargo bike alongside a car you still keep. Then you are adding cost, and the return is measured in trips shifted rather than dollars saved. That is a perfectly good reason to buy one, it is just a different reason.
Be honest about the trips it cannot do. Rain and cold reduce ride frequency more than people predict, and a genuinely icy week means the car comes out. Trips beyond about 12 miles each way with a load become tiring even with assist, and real range with 300 lb aboard is often half the claimed figure, which is the same effect explained in the long range guide. Add secure parking to your budget too: a cargo bike is a large, valuable, hard-to-hide object and needs a serious lock plus somewhere to use it, which we cover in locks and theft prevention.
Factor in the recurring costs while you are at it. A cargo bike eats chains and brake pads at two to three times the rate of a normal bike, and the battery is a wear item that costs a meaningful fraction of a budget bike to replace.
