Best Electric Bikes Under $500
This is the one price bracket where the first question is not range or motor power. It is whether the battery in the frame has been tested by anybody at all.

A complete electric bike for under $500 has to cover a frame, wheels, brakes, a motor, a controller, a display, a charger, a battery pack, shipping a 50 lb box across an ocean, and someone's margin. A certified lithium pack of usable size costs a meaningful fraction of that total on its own. The arithmetic does not leave room for much, and it tells you exactly where corners get cut.
That is worth saying plainly because the cuts in this bracket are not the usual budget compromises. A heavier frame or a clunky derailleur is an annoyance. An uncertified battery pack and a mismatched charger sitting in a hallway overnight are a different category of problem, and they are the reason fire departments in several US cities now publish ebike-specific guidance.
None of that means you cannot buy anything here. It means you buy in a specific order: certification first, brand accountability second, then the bike. Do it in that order and there are workable options. Do it in the usual order, sorting by price and reading the range claim, and you are gambling.
What $500 actually buys
Strip away the marketing and this bracket is remarkably consistent. You are looking at a steel or low-grade aluminum frame, a rear hub motor rated between 250W and 500W, a 36V battery in the 8 to 10 Ah range, mechanical disc brakes or, on the cheapest listings, rim brakes, a cadence sensor rather than a torque sensor, and a seven-speed derailleur that arrived out of adjustment.
Total weight lands between 45 and 60 lb. That number matters more than buyers expect. It is the weight you carry up a step, lift onto a rack, or push home if the controller quits. A 55 lb bike with dead electronics is not a bicycle you can ride, it is a very heavy object with pedals.
The three shapes that genuinely exist at this price are a basic hub-drive city bike with 26 inch wheels, a 20 inch small-wheel folder, and occasionally a last-generation model from a real brand clearing out inventory. Everything else advertised here, particularly anything claiming 1000W or a 60 mile range for $400, is a spec sheet rather than a product.
What does not exist under $500 is a mid-drive motor, a torque sensor, hydraulic brakes, or a battery with cells from a named manufacturer. The battery safety filter, applied before anything else
Two certifications matter, and people conflate them constantly.
UL 2849 certifies the complete electrical system: battery pack, charger, controller, motor, and the wiring between them, tested as one thing. It is the standard you want, because most failures happen at the interfaces rather than inside a single component.
UL 2271 certifies the battery pack alone. It covers cell quality, the battery management system, thermal behavior, and abuse tests including overcharge and short circuit. It is a real standard and a genuine improvement over nothing, but it says nothing about whether the charger that shipped in the box is appropriate for that pack.
Reported ebike fires cluster around three causes: packs that were never certified and use mixed or salvaged cells, packs that were physically damaged in a crash or by water and then charged anyway, and chargers that do not match the pack. New York City, which has more of these fires than anywhere else in the country, traced the pattern clearly enough that it now bans the sale of uncertified ebike batteries outright. Several other jurisdictions have followed.
The second filter is corporate. Can you find a US business address and reach a human? Brands that sell direct in the US and hold inventory here can send you a replacement controller, a spare battery keyed to your bike, or a charger that is actually correct. A marketplace storefront with a randomly generated brand name cannot do any of those, and when the pack degrades in eighteen months you will find no replacement exists. That turns a $450 bike into a $450 loss rather than a $150 battery swap.
Where the money got cut, in order
Budget bikes love to advertise watts, because watts are cheap. The parts that are expensive are the ones that stop you and hold you together.
Brakes, on a bike that weighs 55 lb
A loaded ebike at 20 mph carries roughly three times the kinetic energy of a 25 lb road bike at 15 mph. Rim brakes were marginal on a light bike in the rain. On a heavy one with a throttle they are genuinely inadequate, and they are still fitted to plenty of listings under $500. Mechanical disc brakes are the floor here, and even then insist on 180 mm rotors rather than 160 mm. Hydraulics essentially do not appear until you cross into the $800 bracket.
The controller and wiring
An unbranded controller with no model number is a black box. When it fails, and cheap ones fail more often, nobody can tell you which replacement is compatible, because there is no published spec. Water ingress at connectors is the common failure mode: cheap connectors are not sealed, and a bike parked in the rain twice can start throwing intermittent cutouts that are effectively undiagnosable.
Wheels and spokes
Machine-built wheels with low spoke tension go out of true fast under motor torque, especially the rear wheel, which is carrying both the hub motor and most of your weight. Sensors, which change how the bike feels
Every bike in this bracket uses a cadence sensor. It detects that the cranks are turning and applies a preset amount of power, so assistance arrives a fraction of a second after you start pedaling and lands in a lump rather than proportionally. It works, it just feels like a switch rather than an amplifier. Torque sensors, which measure how hard you push and scale power to match, start appearing around $1,200.
What a good sub-$500 bike gets right
- Removes the effort barrier for short, flat trips
- A throttle makes starts from a stop effortless, which matters for knees and for traffic
- Cheap enough to lock outside a grocery store without anxiety
- Replaces a lot of two-mile car trips
What you are accepting
- Battery certification is the exception rather than the rule
- Mechanical or rim brakes on a 50+ lb bike
- Parts availability that can be zero after one product cycle
- Real range of 15 to 25 miles, not the 40 to 50 on the listing
- Cadence sensing that feels abrupt rather than natural
What to buy under $500
Model names in this bracket turn over every few months and half of them are the same factory bike under three brand names, so specific recommendations go stale faster than they are useful. What follows is written as four buying targets. Take the spec list to whatever is actually in stock and reject anything that misses a line.
A certified 500W hub commuter
- Motor: 350W to 500W rear hub, Class 2 with a throttle
- Battery: 36V or 48V, 350 to 500 Wh, UL 2271 pack minimum
- Brakes: mechanical discs, 180 mm rotors front and rear
- Reject if: rim brakes, no certification named, no US contact
This is the bike most people are actually shopping for: a flat-bar city bike with 26 inch or 27.5 inch wheels, a throttle, and enough range for a commute under ten miles each way. The throttle is why it beats a cheap non-electric bike for errands, and it is the reason to make sure the bike is a properly labelled Class 2 rather than something that quietly assists past 20 mph. A 20 inch small-wheel folder
- Wheels: 20 inch, folding frame and folding stem
- Battery: 36V, 7.5 to 10 Ah, removable for indoor charging
- Weight: expect 45 to 55 lb even folded
- Check: hinge clamps that tighten with a bolt, not just a lever
Folders dominate this price because small wheels and a short frame use less material. They also solve the single biggest safety problem in cheap ebikes: a removable battery you can carry inside and charge where you can see it, rather than leaving a pack in a shared garage. The trade-off is ride quality. Twenty inch wheels drop into potholes that a 26 inch wheel rolls over, and the short wheelbase makes the steering nervous above 15 mph. Check the frame hinge carefully; a hinge that develops play is the one failure on a folder you cannot ride through.
A last-generation model from a US-supported brand
- Certification: UL 2849 whole-system, which is normal at this price
- Support: US phone support, stocked spares, real warranty terms
- Battery: 48V, 460 to 500 Wh, cells from a named manufacturer
- Why: the extra $100 to $150 buys the parts nobody advertises
This is the recommendation we would actually make to a friend. The gap between $450 and $600 is small in dollars and enormous in what it buys: a certified system rather than an uncertified one, a company that answers the phone, and a battery you can replace in three years instead of throwing the bike away. When a known brand clears last year's model, you are buying a product that had a real engineering budget at a price the current lineup does not offer. If you can find $200 more, the sub-$800 bracket adds hydraulic brakes and a warranty worth having.
Factory refurbished, direct from the brand
- Source: the manufacturer refurb store direct, not a third-party reseller
- Warranty: insist on 6 months minimum, in writing
- Battery: confirm the pack is new or capacity-tested, not just "inspected"
- Avoid: private-sale used bikes with unknown charge history
Factory refurbs are returns and cosmetic-blemish units that went back through the brand's own workshop. You get a bike that originally sold for $900 to $1,300, with its original certification, at $500ish, plus a shortened warranty. The one thing to nail down before paying is the battery: ask directly whether the pack is new, and if not, whether it was capacity tested. A refurbished bike with a tired pack is a bike you will spend $350 on within a year.

Note the row that does not improve much: weight. Budget ebikes are heavy at every price under $1,500, because the savings come out of components, not out of the frame and battery. If lifting the bike matters, shop by weight explicitly, and look hard at folders.
The refurb and clearance route, in detail
Three channels regularly put a genuinely good bike into this price range, and none of them are the ones that rank for "cheap ebike".
- Manufacturer refurb stores. Most direct-to-consumer brands run one. Stock is unpredictable and moves fast, so it rewards checking weekly rather than searching once.
- End-of-model-year clearance. When a brand launches a new version, the old one gets discounted hard. The changes between generations are usually a new display or a frame color, not the parts that matter.
- Open-box from a local shop. Bikes assembled for the floor, or returned within the return window. You get a mechanic who has already touched the bike, which is worth real money on a machine that ships badly adjusted.
In each case you are buying a bike that was engineered to a higher price, which is a fundamentally different product from a bike engineered to $450. Charging a cheap ebike without setting your house on fire
This applies to every ebike, but it applies hardest here, because the packs are the least well protected.
- Use only the charger that came with the bike. A generic charger with the same barrel plug can have the wrong voltage or the wrong termination behavior, and the pack will accept the current anyway. This is a top cause of fires.
- Charge where you can see it, on a hard non-flammable surface. Not on carpet, not on a bed, not in a closet, not blocking the only exit from a room.
- Do not charge overnight unattended. Charge while you are awake and in the building. Unplug at 100 percent instead of leaving it plugged in until morning.
- Never charge a pack that has been crashed, dropped, or submerged. Internal cell damage is invisible from outside. A pack that gets warm, swells, hisses, or smells sweet is finished. Move it outside away from anything that burns and contact the manufacturer.
- Let it cool first. Charging a pack straight off a hot ride, or a pack that has been in a freezing garage, stresses the cells. Room temperature is what you want.
- Store at 40 to 80 percent if you are not riding for a month. Storing full or empty is what kills packs early.
Should you buy one at all?
Three honest answers depending on who you are.
Buy under $500 if your rides are short and flat, you want a throttle to get moving from a stop, you can find a bike with a named certification and a US contact, and you accept that you are buying something with a three to four year life rather than a decade. For a two mile school run or a flat commute, this is a completely rational purchase.
Do not buy under $500 if you are over about 250 lb, your route has real hills, you need the bike to be reliable enough that you cannot afford a week off it, or you would be charging it in a shared building where a fire endangers other people. Every one of those pushes you up a bracket, and the sub-$1,000 bracket is where budget ebikes get genuinely good.
Consider a non-electric bike instead if your honest reason for wanting an ebike is hills or fitness. A $500 bike from a shop has better brakes, weighs half as much, and can be repaired anywhere on earth. There is no shame in the answer being a bicycle.
